The Bad News Bears

THE COACH IS WAITING FOR HIS NEXT BEER. THE PITCHER IS WAITING FOR HER FIRST BRA. THE TEAM IS WAITING FOR A MIRACLE. CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES.

badnewsbears76An alcoholic former baseball player (Walter Matthau) is hired to coach a California Little League team that stands no chance of winning games. This comedy became much talked-about because of its cast of young talents that are foul-mouthed and generally behaving like grown-ups. Pairing them with a drunk who doesn’t give a shit about anything certainly provides for laughs. It’s a simple underdog story whose last half-hour may focus a little too much on the game itself, but the cast is perfect. The use of Bizet’s “Carmen” feels forced at first, but elevates the finale.

1976-U.S. 102 min. Color. Directed by Michael Ritchie. Screenplay: Bill Lancaster. Cast: Walter Matthau (Morris Buttermaker), Tatum O’Neal (Amanda Whurlitzer), Vic Morrow (Roy Turner), Joyce Van Patten, Jackie Earle Haley, Alfred W. Lutter.

Trivia: Lancaster reportedly based the coach on his father, Burt Lancaster. Jodie Foster was considered for the part of Amanda. Followed by two sequels, starting with The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977), as well as a TV series (1979-1980). Remade as Bad News Bears (2005).
