Zozo

zozoDuring the Lebanon War in the 1980s, young Zozo (Imad Creidi) learns how to live in the shadow of the conflict, but when it hits him in full force he needs to start a new life – in Sweden. Josef Fares’s third movie has a serious streak that’s lacking in the predecessors, but it’s his most personal yet. Inspired by his own childhood as a refugee from a war zone, the story shows what kind of conflicts await anyone who’s suffered a trauma and tries to adapt to life in a new country. Made with a lot of compassion (and a touch of magic realism), the film ultimately does not quite have the depth or impact Fares is aiming for.

2005-Sweden-Denmark-Britain. 103 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Josef Fares. Cast: Imad Creidi (Zozo), Antoinette Turk (Rita), Elias Gergi (Zozo’s grandfather), Carmen Lebbos, Viktor Axelsson, Charbel Iskandar.

Trivia: The director’s brother Fares Fares provides the voice of the talking chicken.
