Farewell De Gaulle, Farewell

As the student protests of 1968 escalate into a movement that brings France to a halt, President Charles de Gaulle (Pierre Vernier) and his government are unable to handle the situation. The May events of that year resulted in the largest general strike France has ever seen and this TV movie shows the abyss that appeared between the young people who started it and the aging leadership that didn’t grasp how this new discontent could possibly topple the government. Interesting and well acted; the script also connects with later years by referencing several future presidents.

2009-France. Made for TV. 95 min. Color. Directed by Laurent Herbiet. Cast: Pierre Vernier (Charles de Gaulle), Didier Bezace (Georges Pompidou), Frédéric Pierrot (Francois Flohic), Catherine Arditi, Guillaume Gallienne, Gérald Laroche.

Trivia: Original title: Adieu De Gaulle adieu.
