Capitalism: A Love Story

Another documentary from the unabashedly left-wing Michael Moore, a film he’s been working on for many years and that reconnects with his first, Roger and Me (1989), which basically dealt with the same issue, the economy. In his view, capitalism is not a well-functioning system, at least not to 99 percent of the people. In his expected irreverent and amusing way, Moore goes through everything that’s wrong with it, but never forgets to focus on those who have lost homes and jobs because of the crisis; touching encounters with regular people are always the heart and soul of Moore’s work. One certainly doesn’t have to agree with his socialist conclusions… but his filmmaking skills and arguments are impressive.

2009-U.S. 127 min. Color. Produced by Anne Moore, Michael Moore. Written and directed by Michael Moore.

Trivia: “What I’m asking for is a new economic order. I don’t know how to construct that. I’m not an economist. All I ask is that it have two organising principles. Number one, that the economy is run democratically. In other words, the people have a say in how it’s run, not just the 1%. And number two, that it has an ethical and moral core to it. That nothing is done without considering the ethical nature, no business decision is made without first asking the question, is this for the common good?” (Moore, The Guardian)
