Neds

SOME PEOPLE NEED TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON.

Glasgow, 1972; young John McGill (Gregg Forrest) is torn between the promise of his learning skills and the danger posed by his own family in the shape of an alcoholic father and a delinquent brother. The Magdalene Sisters (2002) director delivers another grim story, this time portraying life in working-class Glasgow where one is more or less expected to turn into a “ned” (Non-Educated Delinquent). We follow one of these kids who is easily a victim but also discovers that he has a knack for being a bully as well. Tough, sometimes funny (and with a few biblical touches), this drama is uneven but worth a look.

2011-Britain-France. 124 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Peter Mullan. Cast: Conor McCarron (John McGill, older), Gregg Forrest (John McGill, younger), Peter Mullan (Mr. McGill), Louise Goodall, Marianna Palka, Joe Szula.
