Potiche

THE TROPHY IS COMING OFF THE SHELF.

In 1977, a factory manager (Fabrice Luchini) is taken hostage by his striking workers and his wife (Catherine Deneuve) takes charge of the business. Director François Ozon’s adaptation of a stage play takes place at a time when labor relations in France were, appropriately enough for the story, extremely volatile. The conflict at the factory is further complicated when a Communist mayor (Gérard Depardieu), who once had an affair with Deneuve, begins to meddle. The revenge of the “potiche” (trophy wife) makes for an amusing, brightly colorful (in the vein of Ozon’s 8 Women) but lightweight romp.

2010-France. 103 min. Color. Written and directed by François Ozon. Play: Pierre Barillet, Jean-Pierre Grédy. Cast: Catherine Deneuve (Suzanne Pujol), Gérard Depardieu (Maurice Babin), Fabrice Luchini (Robert Pujol), Karin Viard, Judith Godrèche, Jérémie Renier.

Trivia: A previous version of the play was made for French TV in 1983.
