This is England ’86

thisisengland88This miniseries takes place three years after the events of This is England (2007). Largely moving away from the coming-of-age saga of Shaun (Thomas Turgoose), Shane Meadows and his team portrays the mod revival scene and puts Vicky McClure’s character in front and center, as she prepares to marry her boyfriend and later faces moral dilemmas. Once again, Meadows tries to connect his story to the major news events of the day (and the nation’s general mood) with mixed results. The cast is excellent, especially McClure, and Meadows has a heartfelt interest in these subcultures, but the miniseries as a whole is a bit meandering.

2010-Britain. Made for TV. 200 min. Color. Directed by Tom Harper, Shane Meadows. Teleplay: Shane Meadows, Jack Thorne. Cast: Vicky McClure (Lol), Joe Gilgun (Woody), Andrew Shim (Milky), Thomas Turgoose (Shaun), Rosamund Hanson, Chanel Cresswell.

Trivia: Originally shown in four episodes, the last two directed by Meadows. Followed by another miniseries, This is England ’88 (2011).
