It’s Complicated

FIRST COMES MARRIAGE. THEN COMES DIVORCE. AND THEN…

Jane Adler (Meryl Streep) becomes attracted to an architect (Steve Martin), but a night of drunken passion with her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) makes her consider the options. Director Nancy Meyers is a reliable supplier of romantic comedies for an older, most likely female audience. This is one of her most successful efforts, cutting back on silly slapstick in favor of more believable emotions, an unpredictable and very attractive love triangle as well as heartfelt thoughts regarding how to move forward in life without causing oneself too much pain. It helps with a cast like this ā€“ Streep and Baldwin are excellent together, and Martin is very likable as the down-to-earth alternative.

2009-U.S. 120 min. Color. Produced byĀ Nancy Meyers, Scott Rudin. Written and directed byĀ Nancy Meyers. Cast: Meryl Streep (Jane Adler), Steve Martin (Adam Schaffer), Alec Baldwin (Jake Adler), John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Rita Wilson, Mary Kay Place.

Last word: “Very early in the writing I started to think about [Streep]. You see I write movies, not books, and I need to picture someone saying those lines because if I just write without doing so, itā€™s limited. So, I attach an actor to the part that inspires me. But I didnā€™t think I would get her! […] She is extremely prepared and knows, not just what she needs to do in the scene, but also the whole picture, as if she were a filmmaker. Meryl is always very thoughtful about the film and the storytelling.” (Meyers, FabAfterFifty)
