19-year-old Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) is being set up to marry a dull English nobleman, but is rescued by falling into a hole in the ground that takes her to a bizarre place called Underland. In Tim Burton’s hands, Lewis Carroll’s books are fused into one story and the movie offers all his expected ingredients – a twisted sense of humor, expressionist settings and Johnny Depp. Wasikowska is a terrific Alice and the cast has amusing performances, but Underland is so computer-animated it looks plastic and the story becomes very formulaic.
