Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

WHY WOULD A MAN FRAME HIMSELF… FOR MURDER?

Reporter C.J. Nicholas (Jesse Metcalfe) is convinced that District Attorney Mark Hunter (Michael Douglas) is manipulating his cases; in order to prove it C.J. sets himself up as a murder suspect. A remake of a 1956 Fritz Lang thriller that was hard to believe even back then; the story hasn’t improved with age. Metcalfe’s character never turns into anything more than the fantasy of a screenwriter with an overactive sense of imagination, and he is also easily outshone by Douglas as the cocky D.A. Entertaining at times, but we always know what move to expect.

2009-U.S. 105 min. Color. Written, directed and photographed by Peter Hyams. Cast: Jesse Metcalfe (C.J. Nicholas), Amber Tamblyn (Ella Crystal), Michael Douglas (Mark Hunter), Orlando Jones, Lawrence Beron, Sewell Whitney.
