To Catch a Killer

THE SPINE-CHILLING TRUE STORY OF THE CAT-AND-MOUSE PURSUIT OF AMERICA’S MOST DIABOLICAL SERIAL KILLER.Ā

tocatchakillerIn the late 1970s, Des Plaines cop Joe Kozenczak (Michael Riley) becomes obsessed with exposing a local businessman (Brian Dennehy) as a kidnapper, rapist and possibly murderer of young men. This miniseries tells the story of how Illinois police caught one of America’s worst serial killers, John Wayne Gacy, and it certainly holds one’s attention. One obvious reason is naturally the sensational nature of the case, but Dennehy is worth a look as the seemingly good-natured constructor (even though he’s twenty years older than Gacy). Well told, but would have benefited from better attention to details; it never looks like it is set in the ’70s.

1992-U.S.-Canada. Made for TV. 180 min. Color. Directed byĀ Eric Till. Cast: Brian Dennehy (John Wayne Gacy), Michael Riley (Joe Kozenczak), Margot Kidder (Rachel Grayson), Meg Foster, Martin Julien, Scott Hylands.

Trivia: Originally aired in two episodes; also released as a 95-minute TV movie. Another telling of this story is the direct-to-DVD release Gacy (2003).
