Wanted

CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY.

wantedWesley Gibson (James McAvoy) has a dead-end job and a girlfriend who prefers to have sex with his best friend, but his miserable life changes on the day he learns his destiny. This loose adaptation of a comic book series has a few similarities to The Matrix (1999), as a simple office drone is transformed into what might be described as a superhero, an assassin with the power to bend the laws of physics. Some will object to the director’s flashy style (that occasionally makes the whole movie look like a trailer), but the action sequences are deliciously spectacular (especially the train chase) and it is easy to identify with and like McAvoy’s character.

2008-U.S. 110 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Jim Lemley, Jason Netter, Marc Platt, Ian Smith. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Screenplay: Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Chris Morgan. Comic Book: Mark Millar, J.G. Jones. Cast: James McAvoy (Wesley Gibson), Morgan Freeman (Sloan), Angelina Jolie (Fox), Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common… Chris Pratt.

Last word: “This comic book had a very unique tone. It’s a little bit smarter than other comic books, except the great character in ‘Iron Man’, he’s a great character, and it’s kind of the same direction. What’s happening in comic books now is the hero is becoming more dramatic, more real. James [McAvoy] grew up in the same city as Mark Millar, the writer who created this comic book. He’s from Glasgow. I found that they have the same sensibility and that was very important because I was trying to protect the original source, to make it as close as possible to the original character, even if it’s visually different and it looks different, and there are different scenes, but tonally it’s the same.” (Bekmambetov, Movies Online)
