The Princess Bride

IT’S AS REAL AS THE FEELINGS YOU FEEL.

Once upon a time there was a Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) who was kidnapped, but two men set out for her – her husband the Prince (Chris Sarandon) and a masked pirate (Cary Elwes) who just might be her true love. Updating fairy tales is a task fraught with risk; this movie suffers from contrivances and an adventure that dispenses laughs and thrills in uneven fashion. Still, it has many fans and indeed serves as an entertaining exercise that gets more engaging the longer it goes on. Mandy Patinkin and Elwes are amusing in their heroic roles… and Billy Crystal shows up long enough (in heavy makeup) to do his thing.

1987-U.S. 98 min. Color. Directed by Rob Reiner. Screenplay, Novel: William Goldman. Music: Mark Knopfler. Song:”Storybook Love” (Willy DeVille). Cast: Cary Elwes (Westley), Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya), Chris Sarandon (Humperdinck), Robin Wright (Buttercup), Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn… Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal.
