Waitress

IF ONLY LIFE WERE AS EASY AS PIE.

waitressSmall-town waitress Jenna Hunterson (Keri Russell) is married to a controlling and intimidating man (Jeremy Sisto) and is far from thrilled when she finds out that she’s pregnant… then she suddenly finds herself in an affair with her doctor (Nathan Fillion). Director Adrienne Shelly’s last film starts out unremarkably but keeps getting better as it evolves, eventually turning into a sweet, funny, intelligent and earnest story about the factors that change our lives. A special treat are the tasty pies Jenna keeps making throughout the film that all carry themes from life. An excellent performance by Russell, who’s ably aided by Cheryl Hines and Andy Griffith as the grumpy man who owns the diner.

2007-U.S. 104 min. Color. Produced by Michael Roiff. Written and directed by Adrienne Shelly. Cast: Keri Russell (Jenna Hunterson), Nathan Fillion (Jim Pomatter), Cheryl Hines (Becky), Adrienne Shelly, Eddie Jemison, Jeremy Sisto… Andy Griffith.

Trivia: Later a Broadway musical. Shelly was murdered before the premiere of the film.

Last word: “Adrienne had 100 per cent control over this movie as a director. She didn’t just write it, direct it and act in it, she was the creative force behind everything, from the jokes down to the expressions. She would say: ‘How are you going to do that face? Nnnn-nnah, I don’t want you to do it like that.’ And she’d explain exactly what she was looking for. This was her movie. She also wrote the songs that I sing in it. She wrote everything. She chose the colour of our outfits; she designed the set of the diner. She was very, very involved at every level.” (Russell, indieLondon)
