Maradona

Director Emir Kusturica’s take on one of international soccer’s most celebrated icons, Diego Maradona, is unconventional, expecting its audience to already know the subject quite well. This documentary is an opportunity to hang with the star, watch him greet ecstatic fans all over the world and listen to his political rants against the U.S. We also get to see him hobnob with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, darlings of the extreme left. Not much here for anyone who’s not a die-hard fan and Kusturica fails to make a compelling connection between the subject and his earlier films. More interesting when Maradona talks about the effect of cocaine on his life.

2008-Spain-France. 90 min. Color. Directed by Emir Kusturica.

Trivia: Original title: Maradona by Kusturica.
