SMALL TOWN GIRL. BIG TIME ADVENTURE.Ā
Teenage sleuth Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts) and her father (Tate Donovan) move to Los Angeles; Nancy has made sure that their new house hides a juicy mystery for her to solve. Hiring the Dick (1999) director for this adaptation of the Carolyn Keene classics turned out to be a good idea; this is engaging entertainment for preteen girls (and perhaps even their parents). Clever how the filmmakers initially portray a 1950s-era small town and then bring the characters into the present; the mystery is less than impressive but the charm isn’t lost. A very appealing performance by Roberts.
