Designing Woman

HIS WORLD IS GUYS AND DOLLS! HER WORLD IS GOWNS AND GLAMOR!

Sports writer Michael Hagen (Gregory Peck) and fashion designer Marilla Brown (Lauren Bacall) get married shortly after meeting; they soon realize that they don’t have much in common – and Michael is threatened by gangsters. It was an MGM costume designer who came up with the idea for this comedy, but I’m sure director Vincente Minnelli looked to both screwball flicks and Hepburn/Tracy vehicles for inspiration. Bacall doesn’t look entirely comfortable, but Peck seems to be enjoying himself. The film gets more amusing as it goes along and it all ends with a glorious fist fight. Mickey Shaugnessy gives the movie’s funniest performance as a very “punchy” ex-champ.

1957-U.S. 118 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Dore Schary. Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Screenplay: George Wells. Cast: Gregory Peck (Michael Hagen), Lauren Bacall (Marilla Brown), Dolores Gray (Lori Shannon), Sam Levene, Mickey Shaughnessy, Chuck Connors.

Trivia: James Stewart and Grace Kelly were allegedly considered for the leads.

Oscar: Best Story and Screenplay.
