Sylvia

LIFE WAS TOO SMALL TO CONTAIN HER…

sylviaSylvia Plath’s daughter apparently didn’t want anything to do with this film about the life of her mother, but the results are respectful. Plath was a confessional poet, so it is natural to take a look at her life; the film starts with her experiences at college, goes through her tumultuous marriage to Ted Hughes and ends in her suicide. Sylvia’s bouts with depression and their consequences are credibly portrayed; the positive thing that came out of them was her dark poetry. The film is a bleak experience, but Gwyneth Paltrow’s performance as the tortured artist makes you care about her fate.

2003-Britain. 105 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Christine Jeffs. Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow (Sylvia Plath), Daniel Craig (Ted Hughes), Jared Harris (Al Alvarez), Blythe Danner, Michael Gambon, Amira Casar.

Trivia: Sylvia’s mother is played by Danner, Paltrow’s real-life mom.
