THE NEW RULES OF WAR.
When Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish citizen, was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2004, Swedish media adopted a suspicious attitude toward him. This upset filmmakers Erik Gandini and Tarik Saleh enough to go to Cuba to see for themselves how the U.S. military runs the camp where “enemy combatants”, prisoners exempt from the Geneva convention, are placed. The directors do not get to meet anyone who’s locked up, the guards won’t say anything controversial and Ghezali himself remains a mysterious figure. In other words, the filmmakers’ mission is a failure, which is a pity because there are times when they are close to addressing something substantial.
