The Host

MAN HAS MADE HIS NEWEST PREDATOR.

When poison is poured into the river Han it creates a monster that starts terrorizing the people of Seoul. The filmmakers took a real news event (the U.S. military did dump formaldehyde in the Han) and let their imagination run wild, resulting in an old-fashioned monster flick. A major hit in South Korea, the film mixes humor and tension as it also portrays a colorful family that ends up at the center of the fight against the beast. A few original touches make this silly thing worth a look. Relatively attractive visual effects, even if the rather anonymous CGI monster won’t scare anyone.

2006-South Korea-Japan. 119 min. Color. Directed by Bong Joon-ho. Screenplay: Bong Joon-ho, Ha Won-jun, Baek Chul-hyun. Cast: Song Kang-ho (Park Gang-du), Byeon Hie-bong (Park Hie-bong), Park Hae-il (Park Nam-il), Bae Du-na, Ko Ah-sung, Scott Wilson.

Trivia: Original title: Gwoemul.
