Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip

richardpryorlivesunsetOne of Richard Pryor’s last standup movies, from the days when they were shown in theaters rather than as HBO specials. This one was taped a while after the comedian managed to set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine, an experience he makes light of; other jokes touch on a visit to Africa (best part of the film, with Pryor finding a nice balance  between comedy and substance) and the differences between men and women. Pryor looks like he’s in good shape in his bright red suit… but I can’t honestly say I found much of his material very funny or original (even though the audience seems to adore him no matter what).

1982-U.S. 82 min. Color. Directed by Joe Layton. Featuring Richard Pryor.

Trivia: Jesse Jackson can be spotted in the audience.
