Hollywood Ending

IT’S GOING TO BE A SHOT IN THE DARK!

hollywoodendingWashed-up movie director Val Waxman (Woody Allen) is given a chance to revive his career by making a new, big movie, but faces obstacles when he’s stricken by hysterical blindness. A film from a period when Allen’s work felt a bit too light-weight. Once again it is easy to recognize his own person in the lead character and this time he has a few digs at modern studio bosses… but the whole part where he goes blind is too protracted, even if this old-fashioned comedy has amusing ideas. The cast is fun to watch, especially Debra Messing as Val’s bimbo girlfriend.

2002-U.S. 112 min. Color. Written and directed by Woody Allen. Cast: Woody Allen (Val Waxman), Téa Leoni (Ellie Waxman), Debra Messing (Lori Fox), Treat Williams, Mark Rydell, George Hamilton.

Quote: “She’s living with a guy the best you can say about him is that sometimes he returns phone calls.” (Allen on Leoni’s new boyfriend)
