The Matador

A HITMAN AND A SALESMAN WALK INTO A BAR…

Hitman Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) is in Mexico City for a job; a chance encounter in a bar with a salesman (Greg Kinnear) leads to something one might even call friendship. It’s hard not to be charmed by this movie that mixes equal doses of humor and thrills. Director Richard Shepard moves his story forward from city to city with great energy, and watching Brosnan and Kinnear at work here is a joy. The former James Bond is particularly good in a role that has more depth than virtually any other character he has played; the hit man is a rough womanizer with no friends, living a life that is slowly driving him into an early grave.

2005-U.S. 97 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced byĀ Pierce Brosnan, Bryan Furst, Sean Furst, Beau St. Clair. Written and directed byĀ Richard Shepard. Cast: Pierce Brosnan (Julian Noble), Greg Kinnear (Danny Wright), Hope Davis (Carolyn Wright), Philip Baker Hall, Dylan Baker, Adam Scott.

Last word:Ā ā€œItā€™s the perfect movie for [Brosnan]. Heā€™s playing a hitman, but thereā€™s some references in there to characters heā€™s played before, and I think that baggage he bought (from Bond) only enhanced the movie. I didnā€™t want to be a parody, I mean I didnā€™t write it thinking Pierce Brosnan would be in it, but I think he saw it as a way to comment about his careerā€. (Shepard, Moviehole)
