Man of the Year

COULD THIS MAN BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT?

Late-night comedian Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is urged by fans to run for president; he agrees to do it and ends up winning the election, but a computer engineer (Laura Linney) suspects fraud. Two years before Al Franken ran for the U.S. Senate, director Barry Levinson delivered another political satire, but this one is no Wag the Dog (1998). It desperately wants to be original, genuine and substantive, but never is. This is tame stuff and Tom Dobbs remains a rather shallow figure; it’s mostly a chance for Williams to crack jokes (and in that area he certainly delivers).Ā

2006-U.S. 108 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Barry Levinson. Cast: Robin Williams (Tom Dobbs), Laura Linney (Eleanor Green), Christopher Walken (Jack Menken), Lewis Black, Jeff Goldblum, Rick Roberts. Cameos: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Matthews, James Carville.

Trivia: Howard Stern was allegedly considered for the part of Dobbs.
