Detroit cop Nick Tellis (Jason Patric), recovering from a horrible incident when he was working undercover, is tasked with finding a cop killer together with the slain officerās unstable partner (Ray Liotta). Director Joe Carnahan got some attention for his first movie. Shot with handheld camera, portraying a cold and ugly Detroit, it is a tough and engrossing study of cops who are forced to split up time between their families and the drug-dealers they go after. A simple story becomes more complex after a while (but never thoroughly impressive); very good performances by the leads.
