Mulholland Dr.

A LOVE STORY IN THE CITY OF DREAMS.

Small-town girl Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) arrives in Hollywood to try her luck; she finds an amnesiac woman (Laura Elena Harring) hiding in her auntā€™s house… After the excellent but conventional The Straight Story (1999), director David Lynch went back to weirdness. Originally a pilot for a new TV show, Lynch turned it into a movie. A longish but interesting and spooky story; the fascinating, dark portrayal of Hollywood becomes a big part of a script that messes around with identities in the shadow of death and dirty business. Here’s every ingredient you expect from a Lynch pic, but more impressively staged than we’ve seen before. Good performances, especially from Watts.

2001-U.S.-France. 145 min. Color. Produced byĀ Mary Sweeney, Alain Sarde, Neal Edelstein, Michael Polaire, Tony Krantz. Written and directed byĀ David Lynch. Cinematography: Peter Deming. Music: Angelo Badalamenti. Editing: Mary Sweeney. Cast: Justin Theroux (Adam Kesher), Naomi Watts (Betty Elms), Laura Elena Harring (Rita), Ann Miller, Scott Wulf, Robert Forster… Dan Hedaya, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lee Grant.

Trivia: In the DVD edition, Lynch included ten clues to the ā€solutionā€.

BAFTA: Best Editing. Cannes: Best Director.

Last word: “I think people know what ‘Mulholland Dr.’ is to them, but they donā€™t trust it. They want to have someone else tell them. I love people analyzing it, but they donā€™t need me to help them out. Thatā€™s the beautiful thing, to figure things out as a detective. Telling them robs them of the joy of thinking it through and feeling it through and coming to a conclusion.” (Lynch, “Lynch on Lynch”)
