The Day the Earth Stood Still

An alien sphere lands in Central Park and a human-looking figure (Keanu Reeves) emerges; he tells a scientist (Jennifer Connelly) that the Earth must be rescued from humanity. The classic 1951 sci-fi movie gets its modern disaster flick remake; except for the theme of ecological annihilation, not much has been updated and there is little point to this version (or to John Cleese’s brief appearance). Reeves isn’t terribly compelling either as the angel of doom and the ending lacks oomph. The visual effects look good though and the film is reasonably well told.

2008-U.S. 103 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Scott Derrickson. Cast: Keanu Reeves (Klaatu), Jennifer Connelly (Helen Benson), Kathy Bates (Regina Jackson), Jaden Smith, Jon Hamm, John Cleese.
