Antz

EVERY ANT HAS HIS DAY.

Worker ant Z ends up posing a major threat, along with princess Bala, to a power-crazed general in the hill. This movie and a bug’s life are fortunately what you get when CGI innovators DreamWorks and Pixar compete with each other. It’s a simple but funny, adult film that hopefully should stop you from stamping on an anthill in the future. Many of the adventurous scenes out in the “wilderness” are quite exhilarating, and the cast is great, Woody Allen in particular as a neurotic New Yorker ant. Then again, themes of tearing down racial barriers and improving labor rights may seem odd in a community of ants that depends on never changing things…

1998-U.S. Animated. 83 min. Color. Produced by Brad Lewis, Aron Warner, Patty Wooton. Directed by Eric Darnell, Tim Johnson. Screenplay: Todd Alcott, Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz. Voices of Woody Allen (Z), Sharon Stone (Bala), Sylvester Stallone (Weaver), Gene Hackman, Christopher Walken, Anne Bancroft… Dan Aykroyd, Danny Glover, Jennifer Lopez, John Mahoney, Paul Mazursky.

Quote: “You know, my – my mother never had time for me. You know, when you’re – when you’re the middle child in a family of five million, you don’t get any attention.” (Allen)

Last word: “I was having a drink with Jeff Katzenberg and he said I was the voice he needed for an ant. I’ve never seen ‘Antz’, but it made more money than my last five pictures put together. I wish it was mine.” (Allen, NY Daily News)
