Fun With Dick and Jane

BONNIE AND CLYDE THEY AIN’T.

Dick Harper (George Segal) once helped put a man on the moon; now, he’s suddenly fired and turns to a (bumbling) life of crime along with the missus (Jane Fonda). There are good satirical points about the upper middle class throughout this comedy, and it is fitfully funny, but above all Ted Kotcheff’s film is an opportunity to just kick back and have a little fun with George and Jane who spend most of the time either arguing or schmoozing. Doesn’t really lead anywhere and becomes a tad too hysterical at times, but has plenty of amusing dialogue and a few situations that might even be considered risqué (at least for 1970s audiences).

1977-U.S. 95 min. Color. Directed by Ted Kotcheff. Cast: Jane Fonda (Jane Harper), George Segal (Dick Harper), Ed McMahon (Charlie Blanchard), Dick Gautier, Allan Miller, John Dehner.

Trivia: Jay Leno has a small role. Faye Dunaway was allegedly considered for the lead. Remade as Fun With Dick and Jane (2005).
