Anywhere But Here

A STORY OF A MOTHER WHO KNOWS BEST… AND A DAUGHTER WHO KNOWS BETTER.

anywherebuthereAdele August (Susan Sarandon) forces her daughter (Natalie Portman) to move with her from Wisconsin to Beverly Hills, hoping to start over in the most glamorous part of the world. Director Wayne Wang stays true to the themes of his previous films; women, family relations and strong emotions color this story as well, although it is pretty similar to the same year’s Tumbleweeds. The script has plenty of clichés, but also a few moving sequences. Terrific acting by Sarandon as the manic-depressive mother and Portman as her somber daughter.

1999-U.S. 114 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Wayne Wang. Screenplay: Alvin Sargent. Novel: Mona Simpson. Cast: Susan Sarandon (Adele August), Natalie Portman (Ann August), Hart Bochner (Josh Spritzer), Shawn Hatosy, Bonnie Bedelia, John Diehl… Elisabeth Moss.
