Waiting to Exhale

FRIENDS ARE THE PEOPLE WHO LET YOU BE YOURSELF… AND NEVER LET YOU FORGET IT.

waitingtoexhaleFour women between the ages of 35 and 45 experience how their lives change because of men; it’s hardest for Bernadine Harris (Angela Bassett) whose husband cheats on her. Director Forest Whitaker’s feature film debut is a movie many women will love, not least the huge crowd that read the popular novel. However, not only men should realize that there are too many generalizations here and Whitaker fails to do much about it. The best thing about the film is the cast; Bassett in particular is great in the most demanding part.

1995-U.S. 121 min. Color. Directed by Forest Whitaker. Novel: Terry McMillan. Cast: Whitney Houston (Savannah Jackson), Angela Bassett (Bernadine Harris), Loretta Devine (Gloria Matthews), Lela Rochon, Gregory Hines, Dennis Haysbert. Cameos: Wesley Snipes, Kelly Preston.
