The Chase

A BREATHLESS, EXPLOSIVE STORY OF TODAY!

When “Bubber” Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison, the people of his Texas home town are affected in different ways; some of them fear his return. The last movie Arthur Penn made before Bonnie and Clyde (1967) is an interesting drama that addresses Southern racism, the sexual revolution and emergence of the youth culture. A lot to handle, and those themes are overshadowed by Penn’s depiction of a boring town stuffed with unpleasant people. Hard to care much for them, but the story is still compelling at times and Marlon Brando is effective as the only sensible man in town.

1966-U.S. 135 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Arthur Penn. Screenplay: Lillian Hellman. Play: Horton Foote. Music: John Barry. Cast: Marlon Brando (Sheriff Calder), Jane Fonda (Anna Reeves), Robert Redford (Charlie “Bubber” Reeves), Angie Dickinson, Janice Rule, James Fox… Robert Duvall, E.G. Marshall.

Trivia: Peter O’Toole and Steve McQueen were allegedly considered for a part.
