The 40 Year Old Virgin

A COMEDY ABOUT THE MOMENTS THAT TOUCH US IN WAYS WE’VE NEVER BEEN TOUCHED BEFORE.

40-year-old Andy Stitzer’s (Steve Carell) workmates discover that he’s never had sex and decide to help him meet a woman. Director Judd Apatow’s feature debut is overlong and occasionally makes the mistake of thinking coarse language is enough to generate real laughs… but I shouldn’t complain too much, because this is often very funny and the writers truly sympathize with their characters. The jokes are never mean-spirited. The Office star Carell is perfect as a man who is basically just a child and Catherine Keener is likeable as the woman who takes an interest in him.

2005-U.S. 116 min. Color. Directed by Judd Apatow. Screenplay: Judd Apatow, Steve Carell. Cast: Steve Carell (Andy Stitzer), Catherine Keener (Trish Piedmont), Paul Rudd (Dave), Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks… Jonah Hill, Kevin Hart.

Trivia: The alternate version runs close to 135 min.
