The Mothman Prophecies

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

John Klein (Richard Gere), a widower, ends up in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where people have made sightings of a mothman warning them of an impending catastrophe. Here’s a movie based on events that took place in Point Pleasant in the 1960s, but the best way to enjoy it is as a straightforward thriller. The filmmakers cleverly create a disconcerting atmosphere; there are themes of grief and predestination that support the story in intriguing ways. Good performances help and there’s a terrifying climax; hardly blindingly original stuff, but engaging.

2002-U.S. 119 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Mark Pellington. Novel: John Keel. Cast: Richard Gere (John Klein), Laura Linney (Connie Mills), Debra Messing (Mary Klein), Will Patton, Lucinda Jenney, Alan Bates.
