Former 1980s pop star Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) gets a chance to revive his career; while trying to write a new hit, he discovers that the girl (Drew Barrymore) who waters his plants has a true talent for writing lyrics. The Two Weeks Notice (2002) director reunites with Grant for another lovely romcom. Grant and Barrymore work their charm in the lead roles and are key to the success of the film. The script has no surprises whatsoever and is hardly hilarious, but writer-director Marc Lawrence does create two likeable characters and that goes a long way. The opening music video from the ā80s is a wonderful, pitch-perfect spoof.
