Ju-on: The Grudge

juonSocial worker Rika Nishina (Megumi Okina) comes to a house where she finds an old lady in a catatonic state; the house is haunted and the curse of the ghosts travels fast. A horror movie in the same vein as Ringu (1998). The script tells the story about a curse that was born out of hatred; divided into episodes where various people are subjected to the curse, the movie has a few scary parts (but not enough to really set this project apart) and is well paced. The ghosts have white skin and black eyes, but what’s truly effective is how the director uses sound to frighten us. And that uncomfortable shower scene has become classic for a reason.

2003-Japan. 92 min. Color. Written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. Cast: Megumi Okina (Rika Nishina), Misaki Ito (Hitomi Tokunaga), Misa Uehara (Izumi Toyama), Yui Ichikawa, Kanji Tsuda, Takako Fuji.

Trivia: The director originally made two films for video; this feature film is a remake of them. Followed by Ju-on: The Grudge 2 (2003); remade in the U.S. as The Grudge (2004).
