Smilla’s Sense of Snow

SNOW COVERS EVERYTHING… EXCEPT THE TRUTH.

smillassenseofsnowSmilla Jaspersen (Julia Ormond) looks into the death of a six-year-old boy in Copenhagen and finds connections with a powerful company and her own Greenlandic background. Director Bille August has turned literary epics into movies before, but this one turns out to be too much of a challenge. There isn’t much life in it until the second half when the action threatens to swamp the other ingredients. In short, it’s very uneven. There are moments when we want to learn more about Smilla, but August and Ormond ultimately fail in making her a truly engrossing lead character.

1997-Germany-Sweden-Denmark. 121 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Bille August. Novel: Peter Høeg. Cinematography: Jörgen Persson. Cast: Julia Ormond (Smilla Jaspersen), Gabriel Byrne (The Mechanic), Richard Harris (Andreas Törk), Robert Loggia, Vanessa Redgrave, Jim Broadbent… Peter Capaldi, Tom Wilkinson.

Trivia: Alternative title: Smilla’s Feeling for Snow.
