Femme Fatale

NOTHING IS MORE DESIRABLE OR MORE DEADLY THAN A WOMAN WITH A SECRET.Ā

Laure Ash (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) double-crosses her partners during a heist at the Cannes film festival; even though she changes her identity, danger comes her way. A new Brian De Palma flick is always fun to check out, but this one shows how empty his visual style can be when there is no sensible script to lean on. We are meant to be seduced by Romijn-Stamosā€™s gorgeous body and the directorā€™s spectacular set-ups (such as the long but exciting opening), but the big twist is just too stupid and unimaginative.

2002-France. 112 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ Brian De Palma. Cast: Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Laure Ash/Lily), Antonio Banderas (Nicolas Bardo), Peter Coyote (Bruce Watts), Eriq Ebouaney, Edouard Montoute, Rie Rasmussen. Cameo: John Stamos.

Trivia: Uma Thurman was allegedly first cast as Laure. Director RĆ©gis Wargnier and actress Sandrine Bonnaire play themselves in the Cannes sequence, which takes place at the premiere of their film East-West (1999).
