Bruce Almighty

IN BRUCE WE TRUST?

Mediocre TV reporter Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) doesn’t get the anchor position he was hoping for; angrily, he blames God and is given the chance to do a better job than the Almighty. This is Carrey going back to the roots; his paycheck may be fatter, stars like Morgan Freeman have been contracted, but this is all essentially familiar. If you can get by the corny Capra stuff there is some down-to-earth substance to be found in the script – we’re told that it is in fact up to us humans, not higher powers, to change our lives. Carrey is often very funny and Freeman was of course born to play the Lord.

2003-U.S. 101 min. Color. Directed by Tom Shadyac. Cast: Jim Carrey (Bruce Nolan), Morgan Freeman (God), Jennifer Aniston (Grace Connelly), Philip Baker Hall, Catherine Bell, Lisa Ann Walter… Steve Carell, Sally Kirkland, Tony Bennett.

Trivia: Co-produced by Carrey and Shadyac. Followed by Evan Almighty (2007).
