Garden State

Unsuccessful actor Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff) goes back home to New Jersey for the funeral of his mother and confronts his troubled past head on. Scrubs star Braff surprised a few people with his directing debut and the Sundance crowd ate it up. Braff is a nice guy, and so is the film, but sometimes we want more than vanilla. He makes the romance between himself and Natalie Portman work (using attractive songs on the soundtrack and lovely shots of New Jersey), but other aspects of the script leave us wanting. Great actors like Ian Holm are unable to bring more depth to their parts. A pity.

2004-U.S. 109 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Zach Braff. Cast: Zach Braff (Andrew Largeman), Natalie Portman (Sam), Peter Sarsgaard (Mark), Ian Holm, Ron Leibman, Jean Smart.
