The Princess Diaries

SHE ROCKS. SHE RULES. SHE REIGNS.

princessdiaries15-year-old American Amelia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) learns that her grandmother (Julie Andrews) is actually the Queen of Genovia and that she herself is next in line to the throne. The Pretty Woman director returns to the “My Fair Lady” concept, with another socially awkward girl who is taught how to behave at formal dinners and whatnot. Overlong, with dubious morals and a lot of predictability, this film is nevertheless marginally charming thanks to the cast, including Larry Miller in a cameo as the Queen’s makeover guy.

2001-U.S. 115 min. Color. Directed by Garry Marshall. Novel: Meg Cabot. Cast: Julie Andrews (Clarisse Renaldi), Anne Hathaway (Amelia Thermopolis), Hector Elizondo (Joe), Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall… Sandra Oh.

Trivia: Co-produced by Whitney Houston. Hathaway’s feature film debut. Followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).
