WELCOME TO THE PARTY.

54In 1998 there were two films about the disco era; The Last Days of Disco is well worth a look, but this one is flawed. The story introduces us to a 19-year-old kid (Ryan Phillippe) from New Jersey who is hired as a busboy at the famous Manhattan nightclub Studio 54; just like in a Martin Scorsese movie, the protagonist is corrupted by this glitzy but destructive world. Mike Myers is gloriously decadent as the legendary Steve Rubell, but Phillippe is quite bland and as a whole this is really only for those who want to look at pretty, half-naked people.

1998-U.S. 93 min. Color. Written and directed by Mark Christopher. Cast: Ryan Phillippe (Shane O’Shea), Salma Hayek (Anita Randazzo), Neve Campbell (Julie Black), Mike Myers (Steve Rubell), Sela Ward, Breckin Meyer… Lauren Hutton, Michael York, Ron Jeremy. Cameos: Sheryl Crow, Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Donald Trump, Art Garfunkel, Peter Bogdanovich.
