The Late Shift

TWO HEADS FIGHTING FOR THE LATE NIGHT CROWN ā€“ ONE HEAD’S GOTTA ROLL.Ā

When Johnny Carson announces his retirement, a battle begins between comedians David Letterman (John Michael Higgins) and Jay Leno (Daniel Roebuck) on who should take over The Tonight Show. HBO’s look behind the scenes of this now classic pseudo battle that was largely fought by agents and producers at NBC and CBS has its amusing moments (at least for those who give a damn about the subject). Kathy Bates is terrific as Leno’s aggressive representative (although the real Helen Kushnick claimed she was demonized) and the actors portraying the comedians do a good enough job.

1996-U.S. Made for TV. 95 min. Color. Directed byĀ Betty Thomas. Book: Bill Carter. Cast: Kathy Bates (Helen Kushnick), John Michael Higgins (David Letterman), Daniel Roebuck (Jay Leno), Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Jr., Peter Jurasik… Sandra Bernhard, Treat Williams.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Ivan Reitman.

Golden Globe: Best Supporting Actress (Bates).Ā
