Beyond the Sea

BOBBY DARIN… IN THE ERA OF COOL HE WAS THE SOUNDTRACK.

Kevin Spacey turned out to be a huge fan of Bobby Darin, so when the opportunity came to portray him on screen there was no way he’d let it slip away. He’s quite good and that goes for the singing as well; it is in fact Spacey’s energy that makes the film worth watching. The story goes through Darin’s life and incorporates fantasy elements and musical numbers that are not entirely successful or involving. Kate Bosworth doesn’t match Spacey’s passion, but the film does look good and it’s a solid biopic about an interesting man who used his borrowed time to keep fighting for success.

2004-Britain-Germany. 118 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Kevin Spacey. Screenplay: Kevin Spacey, Lewis Colick. Cast: Kevin Spacey (Bobby Darin), Kate Bosworth (Sandra Dee), John Goodman (Steve Blauner), Bob Hoskins, Brenda Blethyn, Greta Scacchi.

Trivia: Co-produced by Spacey. At earlier stages, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise were considered for the leads; Barry Levinson and Paul Schrader for directing duties.
