The Man Who Knew Too Little

HE’S ON A MISSION SO SECRET, EVEN HE DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT IT.

Clueless American Wallace Ritchie (Bill Murray) arrives in Britain to see his brother (Peter Gallagher), but when he’s sent off one night for an improv theater performance, he unwittingly becomes involved with a spy ring. The title is a riff on Hitchcock movies and Murray gets to play the Jimmy Stewart/Cary Grant dupe who falls victim to spies and killers. He usually plays characters who are either cynical or stupid, so he knows what he’s doing. Unfortunately, his charm alone can’t carry a spoof this lame.

1997-U.S. 94 min. Color. Directed by Jon Amiel. Novel: Robert Farrar. Cast: Bill Murray (Wallace Ritchie), Peter Gallagher (James Ritchie), Joanne Whalley (Lori), Alfred Molina, Richard Wilson, Geraldine James… Eddie Marsan.
