Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT TOP SECRET.

When legendary TV producer Chuck Barris released his autobiography, there was reason to read it with caution. He did create several of the hottest game shows, but did he also work undercover as a CIA agent, killing over 30 bad guys in the process? The filmmakers choose to take his story almost seriously, but not the film itself, which is an amusing, slight comedy with dark overtones; in his debut, director George Clooney employs plenty of visual tricks, but doesn’t go overboard. Sam Rockwell delivers a dynamic performance as the ridiculed TV man and insecure agent.

2002-U.S. 113 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by George Clooney. Screenplay: Charlie Kaufman. Book: Chuck Barris. Cast: Sam Rockwell (Chuck Barris), Drew Barrymore (Penny Pacino), George Clooney (Jim Byrd), Julia Roberts, Rutger Hauer, Maggie Gyllenhaal… Dick Clark. Cameos: Brad Pitt, Matt Damon.

Trivia: Bryan Singer and David Fincher were allegedly considered for directing duties; Mike Myers, Ben Stiller and Johnny Depp for the part of Barris.

Berlin: Best Actor (Rockwell).
