Pride & Prejudice

A ROMANCE AHEAD OF ITS TIME.

Some time in the late 1700s, Mrs. Bennett (Brenda Blethyn) is desperately trying to get her five daughters safely married; one of them (Keira Knightley) is very independent, however. The definitive adaptation of the novel remains the one from 1940, but Joe Wright’s version is lively, gripping and amusing. A few changes have been made to this classic story about love and the practical choices we must make, but it survives. Magnificently framed by the music, photography and location work, the film also gives Knightley an opportunity to show that there’s more to her than a charming smile. Blethyn is also amusing as the exceptionally goal-oriented mother.

2005-Britain. 128 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Paul Webster. Directed by Joe Wright. Screenplay: Deborah Moggach. Novel: Jane Austen. Cinematography: Roman Osin. Music: Dario Marianelli. Cast: Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Bennet), Matthew Macfadyen (Mr. Darcy), Brenda Blethyn (Mrs. Bennet), Donald Sutherland, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench… Carey Mulligan.

Trivia: Emma Thompson lent a hand during the writing of the script.

Last word: “The first decision, which seemed very obvious to me, but had never been done before was to cast the actors at the age Jane Austen wrote the characters. It’s a story about very young people falling in love for the first time, Elizabeth Bennet is like 20, Darcy is 28. This story can only be told by people of that age because it’s about falling in love for the first time and it’s about not quite recognizing the feelings you are having for someone else.” (Wright, Rope of Silicon)
