An admired American patriot dies in an accident and reporter Steven O’Malley (Spencer Tracy) plans to write a book about himā¦ but the closer he gets to the manās wife (Katharine Hepburn), the closer he gets to the truth. George Cukorās film starts out like Citizen Kane (1941), takes a wartime look at the meaning of patriotism and ends up telling us that even heroes have dark secrets in their lives. The script has a few silly ingredients, but this is nevertheless a very entertaining film. It was Tracy-Hepburnās second together; she is excellent as the widow who ended up making a painful decision.
