BEFORE THEY SHARE A FUTURE, THEY HAVE TO SURVIVE HER PAST.
Bank clerk John Buckingham (Ben Chaplin) orders a Russian bride (Nicole Kidman); she turns out not to speak English… and a few of her friends look intimidating. Director Jez Butterworth’s film (which he and his brother wrote) has a dry sense of British humor, which is good, but also chooses to introduce a bit of darkness. The results are a little too uneven. Chaplin and Kidman are both charming as two people who use extraordinary means to find happiness in life, and the French actors are effective as Russian gangsters.
