Birthday Girl

BEFORE THEY SHARE A FUTURE, THEY HAVE TO SURVIVE HER PAST.

Bank clerk John Buckingham (Ben Chaplin) orders a Russian bride (Nicole Kidman); she turns out not to speak English… and a few of her friends look intimidating. Director Jez Butterworth’s film (which he and his brother wrote) has a dry sense of British humor, which is good, but also chooses to introduce a bit of darkness. The results are a little too uneven. Chaplin and Kidman are both charming as two people who use extraordinary means to find happiness in life, and the French actors are effective as Russian gangsters.

2002-Britain-U.S. 93 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Jez Butterworth. Screenplay: Tom Butterworth, Jez Butterworth. Cast: Nicole Kidman (Nadia), Ben Chaplin (John Buckingham), Vincent Cassel (Alexei), Mathieu Kassovitz.
