The Waterboy

Washed-up college football coach Klein (Henry Winkler) discovers that if you make 31-year-old water boy Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler) angry he turns into a brutal linebacker. Sandler sure finds it’s amusing to portray geeks who carry a lot of rage; this film is related to Happy Gilmore (1996) – but also Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman (1925). Sandler insists on talking like a child (but in an incredibly phony way), which isn’t funny. Kathy Bates on the other hand has her moments as his protective Cajun mama. The story plays out as you expect.

1998-U.S. 88 min. Color. Directed by Frank Coraci. Screenplay: Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy. Cast: Adam Sandler (Bobby Boucher), Kathy Bates (Helen Boucher), Fairuza Balk (Vicki Vallencourt), Henry Winkler (Klein), Jerry Reed, Larry Gilliard, Jr… Rob Schneider.
